Pangeia Instrumentos are acoustic musical instruments, sound devices and sound installations designed and built through a process of experimentation with design, sound and music. The main focus of this project is the phenomenon of metamorphosis and evolution of musical instruments that span the period from pre-history to our days. This phenomenon suggests that form is a variable in the composition process and is intrinsically related to the composer's inner creative impulses and his closest material environment.
The vision
Pangeia Instrumentos is a project where music and musical instruments are used as mediators for dialogue and sharing. This particular mediation among people, the natural environment and the cosmos is acomplished by creating an object that's associated to animals, plants or stars. Exhibitions, workshops for all age groups and performances are bringing this vision to the public. An exhibition of Pangeia Instrumentos works as a space of performance and free experimentation for the visitors.
The process
Through a process of constant redesign, optimisation and the use of new technologies, a series of instruments have been developed for more then a decade by its author, Angolan/Portuguese composer Victor Gama. Developing a whole new lexicon of acoustic and performing possibilities the Instrumentos have been performed and exhibited worldwide in cultural centers and international arts venues such as the Institute for Contemporary Arts in London, the SESC - São Paulo in Brazil, Ormeau Baths Gallery in Belfast, the Portuguese Cultural Center in Maputo, Mozambique or RASA in The Netherlands among others.
The Golian Modes
The golian modes are the result of research and experimentation on the use of a three dimensional component in music composition. It aims at establishing a system of music representation and theory based on ancient knowledge, philosophies and traditions that have been developed by mankind for thousands of years and form a world heritage that is rarely tapped into. The fusion of ancient and contemporary knowledge and technologies aims at developing a wider field of vision and diversified understanding of human interaction through music. More on The Golian Modes.
